Often overlooked or neglected, self-care is the practice of taking intentional actions to nurture and prioritize your own well-being.

It encompasses activities that promote physical, mental, and emotional health, ensuring that you can lead a balanced and fulfilling life.

In this article, we will explore the significance of self-care and provide practical strategies for incorporating it into your daily routine.

Understanding the Importance of Self-Care

Promoting overall well-being. Self-care is essential for maintaining overall well-being. By prioritizing self-care, you invest in your physical, mental, and emotional health. Taking care of yourself allows you to better handle life’s challenges and prevents burnout.

Enhancing productivity and focus. Engaging in self-care activities can have a positive impact on your productivity and focus. When you take the time to recharge and replenish your energy, you are better equipped to handle tasks efficiently and with clarity.

Reducing stress and improving mental health. Self-care plays a crucial role in stress reduction and improving mental health. Engaging in activities such as meditation, exercise, or spending time in nature can help alleviate stress, anxiety, and depression.

Practical Strategies for Self-Care

Prioritize sleep. Quality sleep is fundamental for self-care. Aim for seven to nine hours of uninterrupted sleep each night. Create a soothing bedtime routine, minimize screen time before bed, and ensure your sleep environment is comfortable and conducive to rest.

Nurture your body. Engage in regular physical activity that you enjoy, whether it’s going for a walk, practicing yoga, or playing a sport. Fuel your body with nutritious foods, stay hydrated, and listen to your body’s needs.

Practice mindfulness and relaxation techniques. Incorporate mindfulness and relaxation techniques into your daily routine. This can include meditation, deep breathing exercises, or engaging in activities that bring you joy and peace, such as reading, painting, or listening to music.

Set boundaries and learn to say no. Learning to set boundaries and saying no when necessary is crucial for self-care. Understand your limits and prioritize activities that align with your values and well-being. Remember that it’s okay to put yourself first.

Cultivate healthy relationships. Surround yourself with positive and supportive individuals who uplift you. Prioritize spending quality time with loved ones and foster meaningful connections. Engaging in healthy relationships contributes to your overall well-being.

Disconnect from technology. In our digital age, it’s important to take breaks from technology. Set aside dedicated time each day to disconnect from screens and engage in activities that don’t involve technology. This will help reduce stress and improve your mental health.

Self-care is not a luxury but a necessity. Prioritizing self-care is essential for maintaining your overall well-being, reducing stress, and enhancing productivity. Remember, taking care of yourself is an act of self-love and compassion.

Engaging in regular exercise and movement is vital for maintaining optimal physical and mental well-being. From boosting physical fitness to enhancing cognitive abilities, the benefits of staying active are manifold.

This article explores the significance of physical activity and its various positive impacts on our lives.

Physical Health Benefits

A regular activity offers numerous health benefits. Firstly, it helps in maintaining a healthy weight by burning calories and increasing metabolism. Engaging in activities like jogging, swimming, or cycling helps in shedding excess body fat and improving overall body composition.

Moreover, physical activity plays a crucial role in reducing the risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and certain types of cancer. It strengthens the cardiovascular system, improves blood circulation, and helps control blood pressure.

Regular exercise also enhances bone density, reducing the risk of osteoporosis and fractures.

Mental Well-being

Regular activity not only nourishes our bodies but also has a significant impact on our mental health. Exercise stimulates the release of endorphins, known as “feel-good” hormones, which can alleviate symptoms of depression and anxiety. It also improves sleep patterns, resulting in better quality rest.

Moreover, engaging in exercise can boost self-esteem and body image, fostering a positive sense of self-worth and confidence.

Cognitive Function

Physical activity has been linked to enhanced cognitive function and improved academic performance. Exercise increases blood flow to the brain, delivering oxygen and nutrients essential for optimal brain function. It stimulates the growth of new brain cells and strengthens neural connections, thereby enhancing memory, attention, and problem-solving abilities.

Regular activity has been associated with a reduced risk of cognitive decline and age-related neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s.

Stress Reduction

In today’s hectic and demanding world, stress has become a prevalent concern. Physical activity serves as a powerful tool for managing stress and promoting relaxation. Engaging in exercise diverts the mind from daily worries and induces a state of mindfulness. It triggers the release of endorphins, which act as natural stress relievers.

Furthermore, participating in group activities or sports provides opportunities for social interaction, further alleviating stress and fostering a sense of community.

Longevity and Quality of Life

Leading an active lifestyle has been associated with increased longevity and a higher quality of life. Regular activity can reduce the risk of premature death, particularly from cardiovascular diseases. It enhances overall physical function and mobility, allowing individuals to maintain independence and engage in daily activities.

Being physically active also promotes social engagement, preventing feelings of isolation and loneliness.

The importance of physical activity in nurturing a healthy lifestyle cannot be overstated. It is essential to incorporate physical activity into our daily routines, whether through structured exercise sessions, active hobbies, or simply by adopting an active approach to daily tasks. By prioritizing physical activity, we can lead healthier, more fulfilling lives.

Beyond its physical benefits, yoga offers a holistic approach to well-being, focusing on the mind, body, and spirit.

Regular yoga practice can significantly enhance women’s health, promoting physical strength, flexibility, mental clarity, and emotional balance. In this article, we will explore the numerous benefits that yoga brings to women’s overall well-being.

Stress Reduction and Mental Well-being

In today’s fast-paced world, stress has become a common part of many women’s lives. Yoga provides a sanctuary from chaos, offering relaxation techniques and stress reduction. Through the combination of controlled breathing, meditation, and asanas (yoga poses), women can release tension, quiet their minds, and experience inner peace.

Regular yoga practice helps alleviate symptoms of anxiety, depression, and insomnia, fostering a positive mental state.

Increased Flexibility and Strength

Yoga is renowned for its ability to improve flexibility and strength. Women, in particular, can benefit from the various asanas that target specific muscle groups, promoting both toning and lengthening. As the body becomes more flexible, it reduces the risk of injuries and enhances overall physical performance.

Yoga also helps maintain bone density, which is particularly important for women, as they are more prone to osteoporosis.

Improved Posture and Balance

Many women spend a significant amount of time sitting at desks or engaging in repetitive activities that can lead to poor posture and balance. Yoga focuses on aligning the spine and strengthening core muscles, helping women maintain proper posture both during yoga practice and in everyday life.

By improving balance and stability, yoga reduces the risk of falls and related injuries, especially as women age.

Hormonal Balance

Yoga offers a natural and gentle approach to regulating hormones and alleviating menstrual discomfort. Specific yoga poses, such as forward folds and gentle twists, can help stimulate blood flow to the pelvic area, reducing menstrual cramps.

Regular yoga practice also aids in hormone regulation, contributing to more balanced menstrual cycles and relieving symptoms of premenstrual syndrome (PMS).

Increased Energy Levels

Fatigue is a common complaint among women due to various responsibilities and demanding lifestyles. Yoga helps boost energy levels by stimulating the body’s natural energy centers and promoting healthy circulation. Through deep breathing techniques and invigorating asanas, yoga awakens the body, allowing women to feel more energized and revitalized throughout the day.

Weight Management and Body Confidence

Maintaining a healthy weight can be challenging for many women. Yoga can aid in weight management by increasing metabolism, toning muscles, and reducing stress-induced eating.

Additionally, yoga fosters body awareness and self-acceptance, promoting a positive body image and boosting self-confidence.

Yoga is a powerful practice that offers countless benefits to women’s health and well-being. By incorporating yoga into their daily lives, women can experience increased vitality, strength, and emotional balance, leading to a happier and healthier lifestyle overall.

Remember that a waist circumference of more than 88 centimeters puts a woman’s health at risk.

Extra pounds on the belly can cause diabetes and certain heart diseases.

Knowing this, how can you get rid of this problem? You can handle it!

1. Eat tropical fruits

Pineapple contains enzymes that improve digestion. In addition to being anti-inflammatory, this fruit also helps reduce fluid retention and improve digestion.

It should not be forgotten that good digestion is synonymous with good health. Therefore, by taking care of the health of the intestines and consuming foods that help cleanse the body, we help the body lose weight.

Ways to eat more tropical fruits:

Add fresh pineapples to salads, and combine them with spinach and nuts.

Cook fruit salads for breakfast with papaya and other fruits.

Make natural papaya and pineapple juices.

2. Purple fruits and vegetables

Purple-colored fruits and vegetables are great food for your health and a great way to lose belly fat. However, it is worth choosing those that are most to your taste and choosing what is suitable for each body:

Purple fruits contain lutein, zeaxanthin, resveratrol, vitamin C, fiber, quercetin, and ellagic acid.

They increase the activity of the immune system.

Also, they promote better digestion and help cleanse the body.

The best vegetables and fruits in this category:

Grape

Bilberry

Eggplant

Beet

3. Monosaturated fats

Do monounsaturated fats help you lose belly fat? It seems impossible, but these types of fats are fundamental to health and good shape:

There are fatty acids that help burn fat and prevent its deposition.
Monounsaturated fats trigger a series of mechanisms that activate in the abdominal area and break down fat.

Food enriched with Omega-9 fatty acids is extremely important because our bodies cannot produce them. They keep the heart healthy.

Here are foods that should be in the daily diet:

Nuts

Flax seeds

Extra virgin olive oil

Salmon

Mackerel

Avocado

4. Consume soluble fiber

Soluble fiber helps the most when it comes to losing belly fat. In the process of digestion, it absorbs water, turning it into a gel.

This slows down the digestion process and maintains a feeling of satiety, removing toxins from the body. Add the following foods to your daily diet:

Oatmeal, bran, rye

Carrot, leek, asparagus

5. Sage tea

You’re sure to find sage at a place where herbs are sold. It is often called the women’s herb because of its benefits for women’s health:

Relieves symptoms of menstruation and menopause.

Sage tea also helps the body remove toxins and fight stress.

It is necessary to drink a cup of tea every morning on an empty stomach, as it is an excellent tool in the fight against belly fat.

6. Walking

It is one of the most important daily exercises. Walking is good for health and also promotes a good metabolism, which in turn helps burn fat.

7. Physical exercises

Everyone knows that you should eat healthy food, follow a balanced diet, drink enough water, and avoid consuming saturated fats and sugary drinks.

In addition to these basic steps, one thing is extremely important: doing physical exercises aimed at strengthening the abdominal muscles. Strengthening muscles leads to the disappearance of fat.

Remember that dancing, yoga, and stretching also have a positive effect on strengthening the abdominal muscles and helping to burn fat.

Not really! Daily walks are useful.

The popularity of walks

Despite the good weather, fewer and fewer people decide to exercise in the fresh air. Today, walks are not so popular, and many people prefer to go to the gym.

However, there are very good reasons to quit the gym and go for a walk instead.

1. Walking helps reduce body fat

Walking is an ideal exercise for burning fat, as it allows you to maintain your heart rate (HR) at 65% of your maximum heart rate (220 for men and 226 for women).

Thus, it guarantees the use of fat as the main fuel. Moreover, unlike other cardio exercises, it maintains muscle mass.

2. Walking increase the release of serotonin

Serotonin is a major neurotransmitter in regulating social behavior, emotions, mood, and certain physiological functions such as sleep, food, and muscle contraction. Serotonin deficiency is associated with several mental disorders, such as depression and eating disorders.

Exposure to sunlight and exercise increases serotonin production.

This means improved mood and less risk of depression and cognitive impairment. Exercise reduces the risk of depression and dementia.

3. Walking increase the synthesis of vitamin D

Vitamin D is needed to maintain good bone health, immunity, and the brain. Our main source of vitamin D in the skin is as it converts 7-dehydrocholesterol to vitamin D3 when in contact with sunlight.

So, sunlight is important to get enough vitamin D, and walking is the perfect way to get out in the sun!

Ideally, you should expose at least 10% of your body to the sun every day for 30 minutes without sunscreen.

However, it is very important to note that you should be exposed to the sun without sunscreen only during this period. Don’t forget to wear sunscreen for longer exposure.

4. Walking is good for blood pressure

Because walking is an aerobic exercise, it is an ideal way to keep your blood pressure (BP) within healthy limits. Research by Dr. Alvarez et al. (2013) found a significant drop in BP in children, adolescents, and adults after 60 minutes of aerobic exercise.

The Spanish Heart Foundation considers it one of the best measures to control blood pressure. In addition, the World Health Organization recommends walking at least 150 minutes a week.

The practice of aerobic exercise helps keep blood pressure within normal limits.

5. Walking help maintain normal blood sugar levels

This is due to the increase in energy expenditure and insulin sensitivity during the next 24-48 hours after exercise. Thus, it can reduce the risk and control type 2 diabetes.

6. Walking improve cardiovascular health

Moderate exercise, such as walking, improves myocardial contractility. This makes the heart work better and therefore stay in perfect condition longer.

In addition, due to the vasodilating effect, walking increases blood circulation reduces the risk of circulatory collapse, and thus reduces the risk of heart attack or stroke.

The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute explains that you need to exercise regularly to reap the benefits.

7. Walking increases your ability to engage in physical activity

Walks are useful because they are free, do not require very good physical condition, and can be done anywhere and anytime. They increase your cravings for exercise. Plus, it means you can walk with anyone!

As you can see, walking can help you lead an active lifestyle and enjoy all its benefits. Now that you know what to expect? Take a walk today!

During the lockdown, when you must not leave your home, the problem of lack of physical activity has become even more urgent. This primarily affected mental health. So cases of depression and anxiety disorder became more frequent.

The central nervous system and the musculoskeletal system of a person are closely related. Many functions of the nervous system depend on muscle activity. For example, while walking, it is better to think and remember than at rest.

Science knows that regular physical activity has a positive effect on the psyche of people of different ages and allows for psychological well-being. If you still consider the need to play sports unpleasant and imposed, then it’s time to change your position. Let’s find out exactly what positive psychological effects can be expected, being physically active.

Sports Against Depression

Depression is a fairly common disorder. It has many forms, varying in duration and severity. Weak forms are not always recognized by a person, they are perceived as an increase in susceptibility or a bad mood. Meanwhile, a decrease in the mood with depression is persistent, from two weeks. A person loses interest in the world around him, a decline in strength, sleep problems, and self-deprecating thoughts are observed.

On the example of severe cases of depression, it was proved that the combination of psychotherapy with regular training gives the best result. Mild forms of depression are often overcome on their own. An important role in this is played by sports. Preference should be given to aerobic exercise – running, walking, swimming, cycling. The level of intensity does not play a role, the main thing is regularity.

What is connected with such a strong psychotherapeutic potential of physical activity? Some people think that a person is simply distracted from stress and stops concentrating on it. At the same time, being distracted by sports is more effective than relaxing.

Others adhere to endorphin theory. When playing sports, endorphins, natural antidepressants are released into the bloodstream. The mood improves naturally. Science knows the state of euphoria from running. This condition is described as lightness, satisfaction, lack of pain and discomfort, a feeling of liberation, and merging with nature.

Wearing such shoes has a harmful effect on the feet, which in the future may result in permanent pain or even the need for surgical treatment. Over time, high-heeled shoes or shoes with a narrow or pointed toe can cause:

Foot Pain

Heel increases pressure on the legs, while the weight is distributed unevenly. As a result of this uneven pressure distribution, the pressure at certain points of the foot causes pain. Usually 60% of body weight falls on the heels and 40% on the forefoot. But when wearing shoes with heels, the distribution of 6: 4 is broken, which as a result transfers the weight of the body to the front of the foot, causing pain.

Deformation of feet

Usually shoes with heels – with a narrow nose, so the legs are squeezed into a narrow triangle, while the fingers can run against each other. The result is a bunion of the big toe (“bone”), neuromas and deformities of the toes. Soft heel tissues can also be damaged by wearing shoes with heels.

Back and neck pain

If the balance of the body weight distribution on the heel and toe of the foot is broken 6: 4, and the entire weight of the body is transferred to the front of the foot, the ligaments of the foot and the calf muscles contract, and the muscles of the back and neck are overtaxed. The higher the heel and the more time in the shoes on the heels – the more tension and pain.

Knee pain

Shoes with heels are also a cause of pain in the knees. Wearing shoes with heels increases pressure on the knees when walking by 26%, which causes tension in the ligaments in the knees, and, accordingly, causes pain in the knees. At the same time, the stress in the knee tissues reduces the supply of tissues with important trace elements, which can cause knee patency, arthritis.

Achilles tendon

As a result of wearing shoes on heels, the Achilles tendon is shortened, which causes tendonitis of the tendon.

How to properly wear heels without harm to health

Minimize the damage to the health of the feet from the heels help exercises for the lower legs, fingers and feet.

1. Choose comfortable heels

Choose wide massive heels, on which it is easier to maintain balance. In the right shoes, the heel hits the ground, and then the weight is smoothly transferred to the foot pads.

2. Change shoes

Heels shorten and overtax calf muscles. And on the other hand, the muscles of the lower leg, on the contrary, stretch. The balance in the development of muscles is disturbed, and this increases the risk of injury.

Heels do not need to be worn every day. Like sneakers or ballet flats on a completely flat sole: the feet get used to one position. It is best to alternate the shoes so that the legs are not in the same position.

3. Do the exercises

To maintain the health of the foot muscles, perform a small set of exercises 3-4 times a week.

It is useful to stand with your toes on the lower step of the ladder and lower your heels. So the muscles of the lower leg will stretch. In this position, hold for 10 seconds, then stand on your toes.

It is useful to walk on the heels, on the outer and inner sides of the foot.

When you relax sitting, roll a bottle of water or a massage ball.

Every day the body should receive a sufficient amount of fluid for its normal functioning. Therefore, doctors, trainers and nutritionists recommend consuming more clean water. It helps to maintain the water-salt balance in the cells, facilitates the work of the cardiovascular system. Especially important is the use of water for people who perform dynamic exercises in training. Intensive motor activity and high physical activity lead to increased sweating. Accelerated and deep breathing during fitness classes also contributes to a large loss of fluid. As a consequence, the balance of liquid and trace elements in the body is disturbed, the blood becomes thicker, the load on the heart increases significantly. Therefore, the body needs hydration – maintaining and restoring the body’s water balance during any training. The athlete should use a volume of fluid approximately equal to that which the body lost with sweat, breathing and urine, performing, for example, racing exercises.

The use of water in performing dynamic exercises

Long running training is one of the most dynamic and debilitating types of exercise. When running for long distances, the body undergoes significant loads, while losing a large amount of fluid that goes along with sweat and breathing. The volume of the lost fluid will be different for each person – this is due to the individual characteristics of the body. It’s no secret that some people sweat more than others. Therefore, you should determine your norm for replenishing lost fluid during fitness classes. On average, with long races, professional athletes drink water every 20-25 minutes for 200-300 ml. It should be borne in mind that the natural mechanism that reports a significant loss of fluid, namely, a thirst, may be delayed.

The loss of fluid is influenced by the conditions in which a person performs physical exercises. In hot weather in a dry climate, sweating is more active. In such conditions, sweat quickly evaporates, controlling the amount of fluid lost becomes more difficult.

Factors that affect the amount of fluid lost during running exercises:

Individual features of the organism and heredity. Increased sweating is often associated with a genetic predisposition and is inherited, from parents to children.

The growth and weight of the athlete are important.

The level of physical fitness. The better the physical form of a person, the more sweat is released when performing physical exercises.

Climatic and weather conditions. High humidity and air temperature contribute to increased sweat secretion.

Distance of the race. The more it is, the higher the level of physical activity, and more sweat is released by the body.

That’s why at large cross-country competitions, you can notice a lot of sites where athletes can drink water.

Calculation of the individual water norm when performing physical exercises

As already mentioned above, the volume of fluid lost from sweat is individual for each person and depends on many factors. Given these factors, as well as the body weight before and after running exercises, you can determine the optimal rate of drinking water to restore the body’s water balance.

The following data should be considered:

Climatic and weather conditions in the place of the race. It is necessary to take into account the temperature and humidity of the air, the direction and force of the wind.

Weight of the body before the race and after overcoming the distance. It is advisable to weigh without clothes.

The volume of all the water drunk during the running exercise. For this purpose it is recommended to use special bottles with marked markings.

It is necessary to take into account the volume of fluid withdrawn from the urine, if this occurred during the race.

The distance and the time spent on overcoming it.
Of course, these measurements should not be taken after each fitness session. It is enough to determine your approximate rate of water consumption once every six months.

You can use water during exercise several times in small portions, or rarely, but in a larger volume.

Restoring water balance after fitness

Separately, we should focus on restoring the water-salt balance after a long running training session. Some experts believe that after you have completed intensive physical exercises, you should refrain from drinking water for 30-40 minutes. This will significantly improve the overall endurance of the body, and during this time the work of the cardiovascular system will normalize, respiration will be restored.

Other experts recommend using water immediately after training. Dynamic fitness classes, and especially running, lead to a significant loss of fluid. In some cases, the body can lose up to 3 liters of fluid, which will create a serious threat to the health of the athlete. A number of important internal organs begin to experience an acute shortage of fluid, the load on the heart increases significantly. But to drink water immediately after training should be correct.

Recommendations for proper hydration after intensive running training:

Do not immediately drink a lot of water – this will create a greater strain on the heart. The volume obtained by means of the rules described above should be divided into several portions and consumed at short intervals.

Even if you are not thirsty, you should take a few sips of water. As mentioned above – the feeling of thirst may be delayed.

It should be remembered that you can drink water immediately after exercising by fitness, for those who used it while running. If you refrained from water during the race, you should wait at least 20 minutes and fully regain your breath.

The exact causes of dementia are not yet known, but scientists know that one of the risk factors is the “wrong” aging of the brain. Specialists from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine (USA) conducted a large-scale analysis of publications on dementia and Alzheimer’s disease and found that there are three main methods that can slow the progression of dementia or even prevent it .

Brain training

Solving crossword puzzles or online puzzles helps develop critical thinking. The effect of puzzles is controversial, however brain training can increase its neuroplasticity, which, in turn, hinders the reduction of cognitive functions. Several small studies have shown that those elderly people who regularly asked their brains work were less likely to suffer from dementia than their peers who did not do any “mental exercises”.

Control of blood pressure

According to the results of the study, it was found that high blood pressure, especially in those arteries that feed the head and neck, can be associated with a deterioration of mental abilities. Australian scientists found that people who had high brachial blood pressure (the same as the one measured on the arm), did worse in the tests where it was necessary to rely on visual information. High central blood pressure influenced not only the visual perception, but also the speed of data processing. Thus, measuring the central blood pressure can help determine if the patient is at risk, and it is also helpful to constantly monitor your blood pressure while monitoring the changes.

Exercises

Physical stress is useful for health in general, and in the elderly – especially important. They help slow the aging of the brain and, consequently, worsen cognitive functions. Regular exercises allow older people to stay in their right mind longer.

Refusal of alcohol

Dependence on alcohol is a risk factor in the development of many diseases. It can shorten life for up to 20 years, and many premature deaths among heavily drinking people are due to the fact that the patient develops dementia (including the early – at the age of 65) against alcohol. The World Health Organization indicates that a person who consumes at least 40-60 grams of pure alcohol daily can be considered a strong drinker. French and Canadian scientists have conducted a large-scale study to find out exactly how alcohol dependence and dementia are linked, including chronic diseases and mental disorders caused by excessive drinking.

Out of 57 thousand cases of early dementia, 57% occurred against the background of alcohol dependence. Experts stressed that women on average suffer from dementia more than men, but among those who had dementia at the age of 65, the majority of men – almost two thirds, 64.9%. The excessive use of alcohol influenced the risk of developing dementia not only directly, but indirectly, increasing the commitment of study participants, for example, to smoking. Strongly drinking people often suffered from depression, they often had high blood pressure, diabetes, hearing loss and other alcohol-related illnesses. All these diseases can also increase the likelihood of developing dementia. The scientists noted that during their work only the most serious cases were analyzed – those that led to hospitalization. Given the stigmatization of alcohol dependence, the association between it and dementia may be even stronger.
